Jesus welcomes children

Children have dignity because God made them in his image, and Jesus welcomes children by grace, not because they are impressive.

Main truth

Children have dignity because God made them in his image, and Jesus welcomes children by grace, not because they are impressive.

Parent steps

  1. Briefly read Genesis 1:26-31 and name each child as someone made in God's image.
  2. Read Mark 10:13-16 and ask who tried to block the children and what Jesus did.
  3. Offer no-contact welcome choices: wave, smile, spoken hello, quiet welcome or making space.
  4. Practise one welcome action for someone new, without assuming what help they need.
  5. Keep Jesus' welcome as grace: children do not earn it by being quiet, clever or impressive.

Activity choices

Little Lights

Place name cards around a heart and choose a picture action: make space, share, smile, use kind words or ask what helps.

Bible Explorers

Use scenarios such as a quiet new child, slow reader, wheelchair user, loud-song dislike or friends excluding someone. Ask what might help and what to ask instead of assume.

Family-length option

Choose one home welcome action this week: learn a name, make space at play or include a sibling in a choice.

Concrete questions

  • Did Jesus send the children away or welcome them?
  • What does Jesus' response show about him?
  • Who might find it hard to join in, and what reasonable help could we offer?

Gentle prayer response

Jesus, thank you for welcoming children. Help us make room for others with kindness and wisdom.

Safety note

Welcome never means accepting unsafe touch, secrecy or behaviour. Do not ask for hugs or require speech, sitting on laps or public sharing.
