Main truth

Jesus loved us first and teaches us to show mercy to every neighbour with wisdom and safe boundaries.

Parent steps

  1. Read Luke 10:25-37 and explain simply that Samaritans and Jews did not usually treat each other as friends.
  2. Name the mercy: the Samaritan saw, had compassion, gave practical help and arranged care.
  3. Read or carefully summarise 1 John 4:10-11 so love flows from God's prior love, not from earning salvation.
  4. Ask what is loving and what is safe in each situation.
  5. Choose one family mercy action that an adult can guide.

Activity choices

Little Lights

Choose between safe picture cards: get an adult or laugh; make space or block; take turns or grab; say no and tell my adult if a stranger asks me to go away.

Bible Explorers

Work through mercy scenarios: new child alone, someone hurt, unsafe secret, mocking accent or disability, unknown adult asking for help elsewhere.

Family-length option

Make a card, share a task, check on a neighbour with an adult or donate one useful item.

Concrete questions

  • Who stopped to help?
  • Why was the Samaritan a surprising helper?
  • How can we love without ignoring safety or boundaries?

Gentle prayer response

Jesus, thank you for loving us first. Give us eyes to notice, hearts moved by mercy and wisdom to get safe help.

Safety note

Love does not require a child to approach strangers, enter danger or keep secrets. Good deeds do not earn salvation.
